Matthew Raines is an Associate Solicitor at JLG, who joined us in September 2021.

Educational Background

10 GCSE’s inc A for English and B for Maths, 3 A-Levels, Undergraduate Geography degree (BA), Graduate Diploma in Law (Commendation), Legal Practice Course (Commendation), Qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered in 2014 and obtained Cilex Civil Practice Rights & Advocacy in 2020.

Associate and team Leader at BLM Law between Jan 2011 – September 2021.

Background in defendant personal injury and civil litigation acting for some of the UK’s biggest insurers.

What does your job at JLG entail?

I am responsible for overseeing the progression of the diesel emissions group litigation actions.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Being influential in the journey of a growing firm with big ambitions trailblazing the newest claims areas in consumer and mass litigation.

What do you think the future holds for mass litigation in the UK?

I believe mass litigation will continue to increase in popularity and will becomes more accepted in the Courts. Mass litigation , or ‘Class Actions’ provide crucial access to justice for Claimants whose modest claims values would not normally be economically viable for most law firms. I also see the continued development of ‘opt out’ mass litigation where a claim is brought on behalf of the entire class of potential claims without the need for them to proactively choose to participate and if the representative claimant is successful the remedy will be available to all potential claimants.

When I am not spending time with my two children, I enjoy walking my dog, running, cycling and watching live sport.
